Skiáthos

Skiathos is mostly covered with pines, walnut and plane trees. Also olive trees and vines are cultivated. The Island offers beautiful beaches as the well known Koukounaries, The large natural port of Skiathos Town is ideal in shape and in location. The houses are small and simple, with two floors in their majority and built amphitheatrically one next to the other. The streets are narrow without any typical planning apart from few parts in the city.

MONASTERY EVANGELISTRIAS: The monastery’s real treasure is the museum, where various articles and several artifacts from the past centuries are preserved.

FORMER CAPITAL KASTRO: Kastro was the biggest medieval town from the twelfth century till 1830. It was built upon a cliff sticking out into the ocean at the north end of the island. Just a narrow strip connected the cliff to the island itself. Here there was built a strong wall with a solid door. The cliff is very high with steep sides. Therefore the people who lived there had a secure town which was easy to defend against enemies.

LALARIA BEACH: This beach is one of the most beautiful and most picturesque beaches of the Island. The northern winds fall with rage on the steep purely white cliffs, towering impressively over the sea. There winds have been creating for millions of years the round, white pebbles called “lalaria” which cover the whole beach.
