Sporades and Pelion

Pelion, the native country of the legendary Centaurs, the summer residence of the twelve Gods of Olympus and the mythical country of the Argonauts, rises in lush magnificence to the northeast of Volos.

Stunning scenery, luscious nature, silky sandy beaches, crystal clear sea, the snow capped mountain, spring water falls, winding cobble-stoned paths ... all images that will stay with you forever and be cherished whenever you think back to your time spent here in Pelion.

Scattered across the Peninsula are over 70 Pelion villages, all varying in size, from the famous mountainous villages of Tsagarada, Portaria and Zagora, to the beautiful coastal resorts of Kala Nera, Milina and Platanias. Pelion is full of magic and scenes of extreme beauty, and is the ideal destination to visit all year round.

During the summer there are many lovely beaches where you can visit, with sparkling crystal clean waters and golden sandy beaches. The blue waters of the Pagasitic Gulf and Aegean Sea are simply superb.

Pelion is also cooler than other parts of Greece during the summer, especially, the more mountainous villages.

VIZITZA: Vizitsa is a traditional mountainous village, which is perfect for calm and quite vacations at an altitude of 320m. The Greek Tourist Organisation has helped tourism in this area by maintaining the traditional style of the old houses and mansions. In the big paved square you can enjoy your coffee sitting underneath the centuries old plain trees.

MILIES: This is a traditional mountainous village at an altitude of 400m and it is obvious the historical past of the village, with traditional Pelion architecture. You will walk along the cobble-stoned paths and see the old houses, mansions and spring water fountains. Visit the rail station. It is here that the steam train "Moutzouris-Smudgy" reaches its destination.

MAKRINITSA and PORTARIA: Known as the balcony of Pelion, Makrinitsa is located between Volos and Chania. The village was built on the slope of the mountain where the lower points have an altitude of 350m and the higher 700m. There are many old traditional houses, mansions and cobble-stoned paths for walking. In the main square, the plain trees are centuries old and provide shade and cool from the hot summer sun. Portaria is a beautiful mountainous traditional village and it was built around the monastery of "Panagias of Portaria", which was itself built in the 13th century. The village is filled with green scenery, spring waters, cobble-stoned paths and old mansions.
